Phil Gibbs

Philip Gibbs est un improvisateur prolifique. Il a appris à jouer de la guitare en autodidacte à l'âge de 13 ans et n'a cessé depuis de développer son style, sa technique et son vocabulaire. L'une des évolutions clés de son jeu est une technique de tapping à deux mains qu'il a développée dans les années 80 et qu'il a affinée dans différents contextes jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Il l'utilise avec beaucoup d'effet et elle est devenue un élément significatif de son arsenal de techniques, d'une manière très adaptative et flexible, où il a un tel contrôle qu'il s'agit plus d'une approche du jeu de l'instrument que d'un simple truc ou effet excentrique. Ayant été un ancien collègue de Paul Dunmall, il a participé à de nombreux enregistrements du saxophoniste.

Philip Gibbs is a prolific improviser. He taught himself to play guitar at the age of 13 and has been developing his style, technique and vocabulary ever since. One of the key developments in his playing is a two-handed tapping technique he developed in the 1980s and has refined in various contexts to this day. He uses it to great effect and it has become a significant part of his arsenal of techniques, in a very adaptive and flexible way, where he has so much control that it is more of an approach to playing the instrument than just a quirky trick or effect. Having been a former colleague of Paul Dunmall, he has participated in many of the saxophonist's recordings.
